GE Ohmeda 4400 Features The GE Ohmeda 4400 Infant Warmer System uses a manual mode of operation that allows selection of the level of radiant heat output as indicated by the % power display on the control panel and the control circuit then maintains the selected level of radiant heat. Servo mode of operation allows selection of the patient’s control temperature and a control system modulates the radiant heat to maintain the patient at the selected control temperature. New born infant can lose a tremendous amount of body heat during birth and first few hours of life Infant warmers are devices that prevent this loss Also called Over head Radiant Warmers Physiology Have over head electrical heating elements that emit infrared rays, usually focused downward to small area where infant is placed Over head unit provides warm environment while allowing for direct observation and free access to the infant unlike in Incubators Delivery rooms, infant care nurseries, admission, infant surgical areas are some places where warmers are used Insensible water loss is greatly increased with use of warmer Infrared rays are an excellent source of heat and are greatly absorbed by the surface of the skin – peripheral blood is heated Heat is transferred to deeper tissues by conduction and by circulating blood Working with Infant Warmers Warmer is provided with a heating element for directing radiant heat onto an infant support surface and a temperature sensing probe attachable to the skin of an infant Automatic mode: when the actual temperature reaches the set temperature value, control signal cuts off the heater output and thereby regulates temperature The control also operates to reduce the power to the heater when the total energy supplied to the heater exceeds a maximum amount over a predetermined time interval Manual mode: the power level is reduced when a preset temperature is reached or if the temperature is not reached after a predetermined time has elapsed In addition, the heater power is interrupted whenever the control signal or the current to the heater exist independent of the other
